UWO = Unexplained Wealth Order … About time
According to the BBC ” A woman fighting to keep her £11.5m London home, after becoming the first target for the UK’s new UK anti-corruption law, has been named as Zamira Hajiyeva. “
The article, read it here , informs the readers that Zamira, is the wife of Jahangir Hajiyev, the former chairman of the International Bank of Azerbaijan. He was jailed in 2016 for 15 years after being convicted of being part of a major fraud and embezzlement.
“A UWO is a new power which has been designed to target suspected corrupt foreign officials who have potentially laundered stolen money through the UK. Investigators from the National Crime Agency believe there are billions of pounds of dirty money invested in British property – but it is almost impossible to charge the owners with a crime or seize the assets because of a lack of evidence. The new Unexplained Wealth Orders are an attempt to force the owners to disclose their wealth. If a suspected corrupt foreign official, or their family, cannot show a legitimate source for their riches, then the National Crime Agency can apply to the High Court to seize the property.” BBC.
London is awash with corrupt money. Anyway, it’s disheartening to read about people who amass such wealth as to be able to spend £16M in Harrods and buy golf courses, when they could have been heroes. The headline could’ve been ‘Zamira, the wonderfully kind lady who transformed the lives thousands of poor children, etc etc’, but no, regardless of how she acquired her probably about to be confiscated wealth, she’s just a consumer of high end stuff. What’s the point in buying a golf course? Did that make her happy? Is she bang into golf? On the course every day, right Zamira? It’s ridiculous. Buying stones when she could’ve bought lives. Pointless. Utterly pointless. What a waste.
