553. Another lady in the benefits queue
Dealing with benefits is not fun, for anyone. One of the most jaded and cynical people I ever met was a retired benefits advisor, the system seems to grind the humanity out of the recipients and the implementors. It’s basically designed not to treat people as individuals, but as units of expense. A case study in diseconomies of scale, in terms of efficiency, transparency, process, and outcomes. A universal basic income for everyone would be a great experiment to run. And remove almost the entire benefits system, which would surely be a blessing to everyone.
