508. First time for her
One of her friends told her about our service, so got in touch, slightly reluctantly, for help.
That’s cool, its what we are here for. In some narratives there’s an assumption that if you offer services like ‘free food’ people will exploit it and take advantage of it. Even some foodbanks have this mentality, requiring people to be referred by a social worker or doctor, and to sing a sad story on the forms to be allowed to have a bag of tinned food.
Our experience is that people only use it when they need it, and as soon as they don’t, they stop. Trust is so much more human and dignified than the assumption of being taken advantage of. It’s also more efficient, cheaper to administrate, and doesn’t exclude people who don’t want to jump through hoops to prove they are poor. If we feed one another, who then will go hungry?
